Questions

What does VLT mean for window tint?

Visible Light Transmission - the share of light the glass plus film lets through. 35% VLT lets 35% in; a lower number is darker. Every state law below is written as a minimum VLT.

What is the darkest legal tint?

It depends on the window and the state. Rear windows are unrestricted in most states; front side windows are the strict ones, with minimums from 70% down to 20%. Find your state in the table.

Is 35% tint legal in every state?

Not on front side windows: states with a 50% or 70% floor do not allow it there. It is legal on the rear and back side windows almost everywhere.

Can I get a medical exemption for darker tint?

Most states allow one with a physician's statement, usually for light sensitivity or a skin condition. The state page says what paperwork it takes and whether a sticker is required.
