Tesla PPF, Window Tint, Wraps and Ceramic Coating

What changes for PPF, tint, wraps and ceramic coating on a Tesla - glass roof, frameless windows, cameras, wash rules - and the shops that work on Teslas, by state.

Prices updated live from our directory 18 min read Written October 23, 2026

No film or tint is made only for Teslas. Even what Tesla sells through its own store is XPEL's regular film, the same rolls a shop opens for a Camry, and the questions that decide a good job are the same too: a pattern cut for the car or film trimmed on the paint, edges wrapped around the panel or stopped short of it, and the state of the paint underneath. What is different is the car under the film. A Tesla has a roof made of glass, side windows with no frame around them, cameras looking out through the glass and the body panels, a trunk where the engine would be, and an owner's manual with stricter washing rules than most detailers follow. Each of those changes how a shop does the work, and this page takes them in turn.

At the end is something no single shop can publish: the shops in our directory whose listings say they work on Teslas, and which of them treat it as a specialty.

Tesla PPF: what changes on the paint

The case for film on a Tesla starts in Tesla's own paperwork. The US warranty for the Model 3, Y, S and X lists "paint and glass stone chips" among the normal wear it does not cover, so the chip on the hood from the first highway drive is the owner's problem from day one. Film is the only product that takes that impact instead of the paint.

The other half of the case is the paint itself, and it is where many sales pages overreach. "Tesla paint is soft" is repeated everywhere and sourced almost nowhere. The measurements we found are from 2019. A Japanese detailing shop's video, reported by InsideEVs, measured 69 to 114 microns (about 2.7 to 4.5 mils) on a Model 3's panels, which the article called "very uneven all over the body". A Finnish chamber of commerce inspection of a Model 3 averaged 106 microns with several areas in the low 70s, where the inspector expected 110 to 150 for a car at that price. Those cars are now seven model years old. Read the numbers as a reason to have your installer measure the paint before polishing anything, not as a fact about the car you are buying today.

The pattern has to match the model year. Tesla updates its cars under the same name - the Model 3 got new bumpers and lights in 2024 (the "Highland" update) and the Model Y in 2025 ("Juniper") - and a pattern cut for the older shape will not fit the newer one. Ask which model year the pattern is for, not just which model.

Through Tesla, or through a shop. Tesla's online store sells XPEL film packages, from a wear-and-tear kit to full body, installed by a participating XPEL dealer - an independent shop either way. The only film Tesla has sold for owners to apply themselves is a pair of pieces for the rear fenders, or the rear doors on a Model Y, with a squeegee, and in 2026 it was listed as out of stock. That kit points at a spot worth covering: the area behind the rear wheels, where the tires throw grit at the body. If a shop quotes only a full front, ask what adding it would take.

Cybertruck is a different job. Its body is stainless steel with no clear coat - Tesla's manual says scratches on it "are in the stainless steel panels themselves" and sends scratch repair to Tesla's own stainless-steel refinishing procedure - so there is no clear coat for a detailer to polish. Tesla sold a satin clear film for it through four California service centers in 2023 and 2024. For film, find a shop that has done one before. 5 shops in the list further down mention Cybertruck work.

Lease rather than own? Tesla's listing for the XPEL film warns that damaged film may need to be removed or replaced at the end of a lease, so check with your leasing company before you book.

Tesla window tint: the glass roof, frameless windows and cameras

The roof. On the Model 3 and Model Y most of the cabin's ceiling is glass, and Tesla's manuals for both say the roof, windshield and windows "score less than 2 on the UV Index scale". UV protection is therefore not the reason to tint it. Heat and glare are: a glass roof over your head in a southern summer is a lot of sun to sit under. XPEL's Tesla program offers roof tint only in light shades, 55 to 70 percent VLT - the share of light the film lets through, so the higher the number, the lighter the tint. Some owners report a roof cracking after tint and some report one cracking without it; no film maker or Tesla document we found settles it either way, and Tesla's warranty does not cover cracked glass unless it is a defect.

No state law we found names roof glass; tint statutes are written around the windshield and the side and rear windows. That is not the same as permission, so check your own state on our window tint laws by state page before going darker than the program's shades.

Frameless windows. The side glass has no frame around it, and the car lowers each window slightly every time a door opens or closes. Fresh tint needs days to cure, and that small drop happens on every door you open, so the edge of the film gets worked before it has set. Ask the installer what they want you to do in that first week - shops that do a lot of Teslas will have an answer ready.

Cameras. A Model Y built before the 2025 update has three cameras at the top of the windshield behind the mirror, one in each door pillar, one in each front fender and one above the rear license plate; the updated Model Y adds a camera in the front bumper, which bumper film has to be cut around. Tesla's manual is strict about the windshield: it says to keep even a water-repellent glass coating off it, because it "may affect the visibility of the autopilot cameras". Tesla's XPEL program does not list windshield tint, and a shop that offers film over the whole windshield, clear or tinted, should explain how it handles the area in front of the cameras.

When the glass is replaced. According to XPEL, Tesla covers reinstalling the film when it replaces glass under its warranty - but only for tint bought through the XPEL program. If the tint came from any other shop, redoing it is on you.

Tesla wraps: vinyl or color PPF

A color change on a Tesla is sold two ways, and the quotes are not comparable until you know which. A vinyl wrap is a thin PVC film - Tesla's wrap service describes its material as polyvinyl chloride and its care as hand-wash only. Color PPF is the same thick urethane as clear protection film, dyed, and it protects against chips where vinyl mostly does not. Tesla has sold both: color paint protection film at a few California service centers in 2023 and 2024, with color PPF now part of XPEL's Tesla program, and vinyl wraps in matte, satin and gloss, listed in 2026 for three California service centers.

Two Tesla details matter for the installer. The fender and pillar cameras sit in panels that get wrapped, so the film has to be cut cleanly around them. And a wrap hides the paint for years: any paint defect from delivery day will be covered, and you will not be able to prove it was there. Have the paint inspected and photographed before the car disappears under film.

Tesla ceramic coating and the washing rules

The cleaning chapter of Tesla's manual does not mention ceramic coatings, for or against. What it does spell out is how the car should be washed, and it is stricter than most detailers' routine:

  • touchless automatic washes only, with Car Wash Mode on (Controls, Service, Car Wash Mode) - it closes the windows, locks the charge port and stops the wipers; the Cybertruck should not go through an automatic wash at all;
  • a pressure washer nozzle kept at least 12 inches from the paint and off the parking sensors;
  • nothing above pH 13, nothing with hydroxide, no acidic cleaners, no hot water and no washing in direct sun;
  • a microfiber cloth rather than a wash mitt, and no chemical wheel cleaners or pre-wash products;
  • no cutting pastes or polishes with harsh abrasives.

That last rule is the one that matters for a coating. A coating goes on after the paint is decontaminated and usually machine polished, and polishing removes clear coat. On paint that may be thinner than average, that is the step to ask about: a careful detailer reads the paint with a thickness gauge first and chooses the lightest polish that does the job. Tesla's warranty does not cover damage from cleaning products, and it does not include appearance care such as polishing.

A coating also makes Tesla's washing rules easier to live with: it helps a touchless wash, which never touches the paint, get the car clean. For glass, Tesla asks that water-repellent coatings go on the side and rear windows only.

The frunk, the hood and the parts nobody should touch

A Tesla has no engine bay to detail, and a detailer who quotes for one has not looked under the hood. What is there is a front trunk. On a Model Y it is either a lined tub with a drain plug at the bottom or not sealed at all, depending on the version. The lined one can be flushed, carefully, with no liquid on the modules, lights, switches and wiring around it; the unsealed one should not get water inside.

Three more rules from the Model Y manual that any shop handling the car should know:

  • close the hood with both hands and never press on its front edge - pressing with one hand can dent it;
  • no high-pressure water at the charge port while the car is charging, and no hose aimed at door seals, modules or exposed wiring;
  • high-voltage cables are typically orange, and the manual says the system has no user-serviceable parts. Nothing about detailing involves them.

Tesla PPF, tint, wrap and ceramic coating cost

No shop in our directory publishes a Tesla price list. Tesla's own store prices the XPEL packages and its wrap service, but that is one seller's menu. So the prices below are for any car: the entry package each service starts at in our directory. The table also shows how many of those shops mention Teslas on their listings.

Service From, any car Shops Mention Teslas
Paint Protection Film $669 - $2,400 503 43
Window Tint $149 - $399 464 40
Vinyl Wrap $100 - $3,000 195 18
Ceramic Coating $350 - $1,095 1,530 45

What moves a film quote up or down - coverage, edges, prep - is in the PPF cost guide; the coating side is in the ceramic coating cost guide, and whether to buy film, a coating or both is in PPF vs ceramic coating. The questions to put to a film installer before booking, Tesla or not, are in the guide to choosing a PPF installer.

Tesla PPF, tint and detailing shops by state

In our directory, 48 shops in 41 cities mention Teslas on their listings, and 25 of them keep a Tesla page, package or specialty. Each shop is listed with the sentence from its listing that put it here, so you can judge how much the mention means; within a state, the shops with a Tesla page, package or specialty come first. Being on this list is not a certification, and a shop missing from it may well do excellent Tesla work; it just does not say so.

Frequently asked

Does PPF or window tint void the Tesla warranty?

Not the warranty as a whole. Tesla's US warranty says it stays in effect when you use a provider other than Tesla, but Tesla may exclude any issue that arises from that work, and it does not cover damage caused by installing non-genuine accessories. So a panel damaged during the install, or glass cracked by it, is between you and the installer. XPEL, Tesla's partner for film and tint, says its own installations won't affect the warranty.

Can you tint a Tesla glass roof?

Yes, and tint shops do it routinely - for heat and glare rather than for UV, because Tesla's Model 3 and Model Y manuals already rate the roof and windows below 2 on the UV Index. XPEL's Tesla program tints the roof only in light shades, 55 to 70 percent VLT, meaning the film lets that share of light through. No state law we could find names roof glass, so check your own state's rules before going darker.

Is Tesla paint really soft?

Unproven for current cars. The published measurements we found are from 2019: a Japanese detailing shop measured 69 to 114 microns on a Model 3, and a Finnish inspection of a Model 3 averaged 106 microns with spots in the low 70s, where the inspector expected 110 to 150 for a car at that price. We found no published measurements of current cars. What is current is Tesla's warranty, which excludes stone chips outright.

Can a Tesla go through a car wash?

A touchless one, in Car Wash Mode. Tesla's manuals for the Model 3, Y, S and X ask for touchless automatic washes only, with the mode switched on from Controls, Service, Car Wash Mode - it closes the windows, locks the charge port and turns off the wipers. Tesla does not recommend automatic washes for the Cybertruck at all.

Does Tesla install PPF or tint itself?

Mostly through a partner. Tesla's online store sells XPEL film and tint, installed by participating XPEL dealers rather than by Tesla staff. In 2023 and 2024 a few California service centers installed Tesla's own color film and a satin clear film for the Cybertruck, and a vinyl wrap service at three California centers was still listed in 2026. Anywhere else, the work is done by an independent shop.

Where do I find a shop that has done Teslas before?

In our directory, 48 shops in 41 cities mention Teslas on their listings, and 25 of them keep a Tesla page, package or specialty. They are listed by state on this page, each with the sentence from its listing that put it there, so you can see whether a shop specializes in Teslas or just works on them.
