Ask three shops what a ceramic coating costs and the highest quote can be triple the lowest. None of them is lying. "Ceramic coating" covers everything from a one-year spray package on a clean commuter to a decade-rated system over two days of paint correction, and the words on the invoice are the same.
The numbers on this page are not our estimates and not one installer's price list. They are read out of the prices that detailing businesses have published on their own listings in our directory, and they move as more shops publish theirs. One honest caveat, stated up front: shops publish the price a package starts at. Read every figure here as the bottom of a quote, not the top.
What shops actually charge
| Service | Typical | Range | Shops |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior Detailing | $139 | $60 - $249 | 206 |
| Paint Correction | $399 | $199 - $700 | 63 |
| Ceramic Coating | $699 | $375 - $1,199 | 105 |
This table is the whole economics of a coating. An exterior detail is the cleaning bracket. Paint correction - machine polishing that removes swirl marks and scratches from the clear coat - is the preparation bracket. A coating sits on top of both, because a shop doing the job properly has to buy those hours before the coating ever goes on: it seals whatever is underneath it, defects included.
Why one quote is triple another
Four things move the number, and all four are legitimate.
The coating's rated life. A one-year entry package and a coating rated for the life of the car are different products at different prices, sold under the same name. The multi-year systems cost more per bottle, take longer to apply, and usually come with a manufacturer's warranty that obliges the installer to prepare the paint to spec.
How much correction the paint needs. A garage-kept car three months off the lot might need a light polish. A daily driver with two years of automatic car wash marks needs multi-stage correction, and that can double the job. This is the single largest swing in any quote, and it is why a shop that prices your car without seeing it has priced somebody else's car.
Size. More panels, more hours. A three-row SUV or a long-bed pickup sits a bracket or two above a sedan at the same shop, for the same reason it does on every other page of the price list.
Who is applying it. Brand-certified installers charge more, and are the only ones who can register the manufacturer's warranty. Whether that paper is worth the premium is a fair question - but it is what the premium buys.
What it costs in your city
- Ceramic coating prices in Houston, TX - typically $795 across 15 shops
- Ceramic coating prices in Dallas, TX - typically $529 across 9 shops
- Ceramic coating prices in Jacksonville, FL - typically $650 across 7 shops
City pages carry the shops behind those figures and what each one quotes - the coating market of a city, listed shop by shop.
Wax, coating, or film - which money does what
The three get cross-shopped, and they should not be. Wax is the cheapest and the shortest-lived: weeks to a few months of gloss, then again. It is a recurring cost that looks small and adds up. A ceramic coating is bought once and works for years, which is the honest arithmetic behind the price - spread over its rated life, a coating on corrected paint usually beats a wax habit. Paint protection film is the only one of the three that stops stone chips: it is physical armor, cut and priced per panel. Film prices published in our directory open at a typical $1,150, against $699 for a coating - and film quotes climb with every panel added, so full-car coverage lands well into four figures.
The DIY kit question
Consumer coatings are real, and on honest terms they are a good buy: under a hundred dollars, forgiving to apply, rated for a year or so. The catch is not the bottle - it is that the preparation is the same work whoever does it. The wash, the clay bar, the polish, the panel wipe: skip any of it and the coating faithfully preserves what you skipped.
The professional's advantage is not a secret liquid. It is a machine polisher, lighting that shows every high spot before the coating cures instead of after, and the experience to know when a panel is actually ready. If you enjoy the work and own the tools, the entry-level result is achievable at home. The multi-year systems are installer-only products, so the top of the market is not a DIY option at any price.
Questions to ask before you book
Is it worth it?
For a keeper, the arithmetic usually works: a coating on corrected paint turns every wash for the next few years into a rinse, and the gloss you paid to restore stays restored. For a car being sold this season, spend the money on a full detail instead - it returns more at sale time, and the next owner will not pay extra for a coating they cannot see.
If you are still weighing the coating against the rest of the menu, the wider cost guide prices every service the same way this page prices the coating - from published lists, not estimates.
Where these numbers come from
Every figure on this page is computed from live listings when the page loads. When a shop publishes or changes a coating price, this page changes with it. We do not average in national estimates, and we do not quote one installer's package as though it spoke for a market.
Based on 728 published prices from 338 detailing shops across 144 cities, read live from our directory on August 25, 2026.
